1917

Directed by Sam Mendes this is the story of two soldiers ordered to go behind what they believe was German enemy lines and deliver a message to call off a planned attack.

Filmed in a number of long shots you really engage with the characters as they make their way through the battlegrounds and just want to survive this monumentous task and get home.

George MacKay is fantastic in this film in fact you can also see him in “Captain Fantastic” which is really good film with Viggo Mortenson and also “How I live Now” which I came across because Jon Hopkins did the soundtrack. Anyway, go and see this film a must see on the big screen to appreciate the performances, relish every detail of the set, the direction and the majesty of the long shots and the music which is wonderful, particularly the Wayfaring stranger sung by a soldier.

Nb it’s worth watching Ed Sheerans version of a wayfaring stranger with all his Loop pedal cleverness made before he got famous and boring.

10/10 from me, well worth the cost of big screen pleasure and a packet of M & M’s.
