If you haven’t been watching Frozen Planet then you must watch this clip about the Woolly Bear Caterpillar. It emerges from the egg in the autumn and overwinters in its caterpillar form when it freezes solid. First its heart stops beating, then its gut freezes, then its blood, followed by the rest of the body.
Then in the spring it thaws out, its heart starts beating and it runs around eating until winter comes and then it freezes again. It repeats this process for 14 years until it finally pupates. Once it emerges from its pupa as a moth it has only days to find a mate before it dies. Amazing!!
