Had a day in Christchurch yesterday and although we had a good day it is so sad to see how much of the city has got to be demolished. When you got to the edge of the red zone you can easily imagine what a lovely area it used to be and now all you can see is empty streets and hear the sound of demolition.
We did visit Re:start a small shopping area made entirely out of shipping containers it was really good with a couple of cafes so it was great to see something being returned to the city centre.
Brings it home to you how large the red zone is.
Seeing the damage is thoroughly depressing but you can see still see enough of the undamaged city to get an appreciation of how lovely it was and still is. I only hope that what is rebuilt compliments and revitalises the city.
