A huge storm approaches a fragmenting southern Louisiana community called the “Bathtub” which is cut off from the rest of the world by a levee.
Five year old Hushpuppy, has to cope with her unstable, drunken father, an absent mother who she pretends to talk to using an old shirt, and society which wants to evict them.
Sounds fun? Well its not really but hushpuppy is just an amazing character, its a beautifully shot film, a lot of the visuals stay in your mind and Quvenzhané Wallis, who plays hushpuppy, (who was only six when this film was shot) is fantastic and she has been nominated for an Oscar for best actress.
A beautiful film – not for everyone but well worth a watch
