Last year Dad & I did a recording of his memories of growing up. He had some great stories going back to his first memories involving a v2 rocket, living in Vicarage road, School days and his memories of holidays in Ty Celyn.
Its a fascinating listen and I have included a few on here.
His earliest memory is a dramatic one. He remembers the Christmas Eve bombing raid on greater Manchester in 1944.
On this day, Forty five V1 ‘Doodlebug’ bombs were launched over the North Sea, with devastating consequences for parts of the region.
Around 15 of the bombs are thought to have landed in parts of Greater Manchester, including Oldham, Bury, Salford, Didsbury, Stockport and Hyde.
The greatest loss of life occurred in Abbey Hills Road in Oldham, where 27 people were killed as they slept, and 49 others were injured.
Another fell in Tottington, near Bury, killing six residents, while in Worsley, a bomb claimed one life.
Meanwhile, the V1 that dad remembers hit Davenport Golf Club on Garners Lane, in Stockport.
It left an 18ft crater, caused significant damage to the surrounding area, destroyed two homes and claimed the life of William Etchells who lived at 89 Garners Lane.
