Movies 2008

  • Untraceable

Untraceable is forgettable. A story of an FBI agent (Diane Lane) who investigates a serial killer who rigs contraptions that kill his victims based on the number of hits received by a website. It gets slightly tense sort of halfway and then again near the end which couldn’t come soon enough. 5/10 Continue reading

  • Juno

It all started with a chair.. I liked this story of Juno, who falls pregnant and after initially deciding to have an abortion she decides to have the baby adopted and along the way you see her learn a lot about herself, her father and her relationship with Paulie Bleeker her boyfriend. Its a good,… Continue reading

  • The Changeling

Went to see this with my Mum last night. To say I really enjoyed it sounds a bit wrong as there are some very harrowing scenes in this movie, but it is very good. Angie played her part very well, and you felt all her frustration and worry with her. K 8/10 Website Continue reading

  • Burn After Reading

If you are a fan of the Coen brothers you’ll love this film. This is a story of some crazy, oddball characters all coming together in a farcical story about missing CIA files. Osborne Cox ( John Malkovich), dictates his spying secrets onto a computer disk, which ends up on the floor at the Hardbodies… Continue reading

  • The Orphanage

This Spanish film is one of those creepy chilling films, not a horror but just dead creepy. It reminded me of “The Others” but its much better than that. Can’t tell you much of the plot without ruining it for you but its basically the story of a mothers hunt for her son who goes… Continue reading

  • REC

This is a really good, full on, Spanish horror film. The central character is television reporter  who is filming a documentary of the local fire crew. One night the crew are called to an apartment building because a woman is trapped in her apartment. They break in with the police and the woman becomes extremely… Continue reading

  • Happy Go Lucky

Well what can I say… this isn’t total rubbish… Poppy, a Primary school teacher is irrepressibly upbeat and cheerful, she’s really likeable and she’s a fun character to watch but that’s all you do. Not much else happens really, she goes to work, has flamenco lessons, has fun with her friends and the only interesting… Continue reading

  • Tropic Thunder

K and I had a good giggle watching this yesterday afternoon. Its the story of five spoiled actors who are filming a Vietnam film. The director, in a bid to get proper performances out of them, drops them in the jungle, installs hidden cameras and rigs special effect explosions so he can film them guerrilla-style. … Continue reading

  • Hellboy II: The Golden Army

Corky and I went to see this this week and we both really enjoyed it. The story starts with young hellboy being told a story about an ancient battle between humans and creatures. An unstoppable clockwork army is built for Balor, the king of the elves which he uses to devastating effect. Feeling a bit… Continue reading

  • The Happening

This is a really odd film, its got some great ideas and some really tense scenes but I’m not sure exactly what Shyamalan was hoping to achieve. It seems that he wrote a few really good scenes but then thought…. how do I string this all together…. I know I’ll just include some really lame… Continue reading

  • Somers Town

New film from Shane Meadows starring Thomas Turgoose who played Shaun in “This is England”. Unfortunately its only on limited release, it does annoy me how just one person from each cinema chain decides what films we want to see. You would have thought at the very least they would promote British films by showing… Continue reading

  • Body Of Lies

Great trailer for the new film from Ridley Scott, starring DiCaprio and Crowe. A CIA operative (DiCaprio) is sent to Jordan to find a high-ranking terrorist. While in Jordan, the operative forms an uneasy alliance with the head of Jordan’s covert operations (Crowe). Continue reading

  • In Bruges

A pair of hit men are sent to Belgium after a job goes wrong where Ray has shot a young boy by mistake.Very much out of place, the two hit men fill their days living the lives of tourists. Ray, still haunted by the bloodshed in London, hates the place, while Ken, loves it. Ken… Continue reading

  • The Mist

Really enjoyed this tense thriller/horror film. In a small town in Maine a mysterious mist rolls in and with it comes some very scary creatures. A number of people barricade themselves in the food store and although they have to fight to stop the creatures getting in its more about the the people who want… Continue reading

  • The Bank Job

Jason Statham plays Terry, a car dealer with a dodgy past is offered the chance to get out of the rut by a girl from his old neighbourhood. It’s a chance to break into its bank and its safety deposit boxes for loads of cash and jewely. But what they terry and his mates don’t… Continue reading

  • There will be Blood

I really can’t see why this film was so critically acclaimed, yes the story is ok but it doesn’t really have any great surprises, Daniel day-Lewis is good but not oscar worthy. Based in the early 1900’s its the story of Daniel Plainview (Day-Lewis) a prospector and a misanthrope, who relentlessly pursues more and more… Continue reading

  • The Dark Knight

With the help of the police and the District Attorney, Batman sets out to destroy organised crime in Gotham for good,at first they succeed, but they soon find themselves prey to the Joker, who creates anarchy in Gotham and forces the Batman closer to crossing the line between hero and vigilante. This is a big,… Continue reading

  • 30 Days of Night

As Barrow in Alaska is entering its polar night for 30 days, it is attacked by a group of vampires who have come to feast on the whole towns population. This is a very good horror film, the best I’ve seen for a while, there are plenty of jumps, gore and suspense and its not… Continue reading

  • Before The Devil Knows Your Dead

Two cash strapped brothers organise the robbery of their parents jewellery store and it all goes horribly wrong. The film goes back and forth in time many times, often showing scenes repeatedly and from various points of view. Told this way, I find, really engages you in the story and you find yourself thinking what… Continue reading

  • No Country for Old Men

Having read the book a couple of years ago I was really looking forward to seeing this film. This is a story about Sheriff Ed tom bell (Tommy lee jones) who is near retirement and is on the trail of Lleweln Moss who is on the run with $2 million dollars he found from a… Continue reading
