K and I went out for dinner and a movie on Wednesday. We had been looking forward to seeing this film and we definitely weren’t disappointed.
Twenty years ago, a spaceship arrives above Johannesburg the aliens don’t attack, instead they are refugees, all one million of them and they are housed in a shanty town (District 9). Tensions between the aliens and the humans comes to a head when a human, Wikus van der Merwe, contracts a mysterious virus that begins changing his DNA. Wikus quickly becomes the most hunted man in the world, as well as the most valuable – he is the key to unlocking the secrets of alien technology and the only place to hide is, District 9.
This is very different from your usual Alien versus Human gore fest. Its done in a documentary style which brings a sort of reality to it and it is totally entertaining, tense, funny and gory. Its also really thought provoking, what would happen if we suddenly had a million alien refugees?
Well made and original.
