Movies

I had some time off over New Year so I caught up on some of the films I havent got round to watching:

The film tells the story of Lee who cares for his teenage nephew after his brother dies but what is his history and why doesn’t he want to stay in Manchester by the Sea?

Told with flashbacks that give you insights on Lee’s life. The film is both really funny and heartbreaking. You smile in one scene and then get an awful revelation in the next. Casey Afflecks performance is really good however Considering Michelle Williams is only on screen for a small part of the film, its her performance that is the most impressive.A tremendous story of loss and guilt.

10/10

Chris and his girlfriend, Rose, have reached the meet-the-parents stage of dating. She invites him for a weekend away to meet her folks. At first, Chris reads the family’s overly friendly behavior as nervous attempts to deal with their daughter’s interracial relationship, but as the weekend progresses, a series of increasingly disturbing discoveries lead him to a truth that he never could have imagined.

Loved this film. It is so creepy, funny and tense, a perfect blend of horror and comedy which doesn’t descend into silliness. The hypnosis scene is terrifying (I’ll never stir a cup of tea for longer than 2 seconds again) and a brilliant performance from Daniel Kaluuya he plays this role perfectly.

10/10

Connor is dealing with far more than other boys his age. His mother is ill. His father has resettled thousands of miles away. And he is going to have to live with his Grandmother who he doesn’t particularly like. But Connor finds an unlikely ally when one night the Monster appears at his window.

This film is well directed by J A Bayona who also directed the Spanish version of “The Orphanage” which was amazing. The monster is fantastic and the animation scenes are really beautiful. Its well acted, but, I got a bit bored too be honest, the story plods on to its unsurprising conclusion. Worth a watch but a bit lacking.

7/10
