New Scientist Live

Emma’s friend Maddy joined us for a trip to New Scientist Live at The EXcel today.
We had a good day meeting beasties and robots

These funny looking beasts are Naked Mole Rats. Amazing subterranean creatures from East Africa which never develop cancer, dont feel pain and live far longer than similar-sized mammals, and can also survive for 18 minutes without oxygen by falling into a kind of suspended animation. When this happens their heart rate drops from 200 beats per minute to around 50. .
The mole rats effectively become plants, altering their metabolism so that cells are powered by fructose rather than glucose, a process which requires no oxygen.
