K planned a day out for me as a birthday treat and we went up to Orford Ness. Owned by the National Trust it is Europe’s largest shingle spit and was formerly owned by the mod who used it as a test site during both world wars and the Cold War.
It is a fascinating place of many contrasts. Now a nature reserve of international importance with a wild, remote beauty but also littered wither various former military buildings which were used mainly for testing bombs and even old laboratory used to test the construction of “Blue Danube” Britain’s first Nuclear weapon.
