The Diving Bell & the Butterfly

Diving Bell & the ButterflyThis film is based on the memoirs of Jean-Dominique Bauby who, at just 42, suffered a severe stroke which left him completely paralysed apart from his left eyelid. Over time he and his speech therapist developed a system by which he could communicate by blinking as she recites a list of most-used letters gradually creating sentences letter by letter.

Before his stroke Bauby who was editor of “Elle”had a contract to write a book. He decides to still write the book, now his memoirs, using this technique with a girl from the publishing house.

Wonderfully directed, the film starts from just Baubys viewpoint, through his left eye, and with his narration you are experiencing his complete helplessness which makes you feel both frightened and fortunate. The film then opens out as he reflects on his life and his conditon and starts to write his book.

Amazing cinematography, a moving story, a bit depressing, but still an excellent film.
