This Netflix drama is based upon the best selling memoir by Deborah Feldman who fled her religious community in Williamsburg, Brooklyn — one of the world’s largest Hasidic groups — after being married off and having a child as a teenager. How much is fact or fiction, who knows but it works, really works, mainly because of the fantastic performance by Shira Haas who plays Etsy. She is absolutely mesmerising in this role. We watched all the episodes back to back!
Emma’s thoughts are:
This is a truly inspiring drama that captures, in only four gripping episodes, the compelling need to have your voice heard and the amount of bravery it takes to carve your own path through the treacherous mountain ranges of a religion built up over the centuries.
