Weekend Away Challenge : 2 London

Our February weekend was a trip to London to meet up with the Caple’s and go to see Turin Brakes.

We met up in Kings Cross, over the last few years the whole area has been going through a huge regeneration and we had a great afternoon exploring the area. One of my favourite places is Coal Drops Yard.

Built in the 1850’s this was 2 viaducts which had a further 2 floors below. The trains would bring coal from the north and come in on the upper level the coal would then be dropped down onto the first floor and sorted into sacks and then down another level to the horse and carts below from where it was distributed into the city or along Regents canal.

It’s now been converted into an area for up-market shops and bars. A fascinating place to explore.

Some great pictures of how it used to look before the development.

In the Evening, after a meal at Mildred’s we went to see Turin Brakes at Kings Place.

It was a fantastic gig, an acoustic set, stripped back, in a small venue of only 400 people. A great atmosphere perfect for Emma’s first gig!

After our night in a Premier Inn we hired some bikes and had a cruise down to Regents Park for a walk then headed beck to Kings Cross to visit the British Library.

Hatty had recommended it and I have to be honest it was fascinating, far more interesting than I expected. One of the documents which really amazed me was “The Articles of the Barons” which was a first draft of an agreement between the Barons and King John and the basis of the Magna Carta. There was also some of the original Beatles Lyrics, really old bibles and I came across a stone dating from the 4th century on which was written a religious recitement.

A great weekend!
