Knepp Castle Estate is 3,500 acres of heavy clay in West Sussex. Though farmed intensively since WW2, the farm rarely made a profit. So in 2001 the owner Charlie Burrel decided on a whole new venture and rewilded the entire estate. Fences were removed and the land allowed to return to its natural state. Livestock are still on the estate. We saw Tamworth pigs and longhorn cattle just roaming freely. The estate has become a breeding hotspot for purple emperor butterflies, turtle doves and 2 per cent of the UK’s population of nightingales.
The campsite was really nice, a large meadow with just small areas cut back for the pitches. There was also yurts, treehouse shepherds huts for the Glampers. It was expensive to camp but you are getting access to the whole estate and we did some lovely walks.
